Copycat – PS5

After seeing the previews on this game I knew it was something I would like. Touching on subjects of abandonment and trauma but ultimately love, this would be a game where I was expecting a lot of feeling and emotion. Created by just two developers based in Sydney this game is certainly a great showing.
At the start you get to choose your main character Dawns identity with different colours and markings available each with a little backstory and brief piece about behaviours. I guess even this small choice helps you feel more connected with your character.
Playing through the game is easy enough with you being guided along in the story and being unable to move forward in the story until you have seen or heard every piece of information available. You’re never left hunting down the missing bits though as the flow of the levels is well thought out. A beautiful touch to the game is the narration reminding me a lot of games like Thomas Was Alone and The Stanley Parable where it helps build that stronger connection and imagine what feelings and thoughts are going through the main characters head. In fact it actually gave me a VERY similar feeling to when playing TWA.
The game itself isn’t too long so I won’t give anything away, with the story taking roughly 4 hours spanning few different locations and with some minigames to play and a few hidden trophies (it pays to meow)
Whilst the game isn’t long it certainly does have a lot of feeling and one where you really do relate to Dawn and the situations she finds herself in. You wind up wondering if your pets really do feel this way sometimes.
I played this on the PS5 Pro and didn’t encounter any issues throughout my playthrough, initially at the start the framerate did seem a little unstable but once the game was out of the first area it was fine for the rest of the game.
Score 4/5
The key was provided to me via PressEngine and comes out on the 29th May 2025 on consoles (PS5/Xbox Series S/X) and already available on Steam.
